I almost died tonight.
My friend gave me his used manual treadmill about a year ago. Of course I've never used it. Since I'm interested in the Couch to 5K program and am dreading the coming 100+ degree days here, I brought it out for a little test drive.
A big girl and a small manual treadmill do not mix. It's a good thing I was holding on to the side bars when I stepped on it. The fixed incline is so high I immediately slipped. Stupidly, I broke out into a run right when it first moved, and next thing I know, I'm running 10 MPH on an unstable piece of cheap plastic.
Needless to say, if I'm truly going to succeed on this ever-so-enticing journey, I'm going to need better equipment.
I'm not quite ready for humanity to see me run, so for the first few weeks, at least, I'm keeping the exercise to the inside of my home. It's better for everyone. Trust me ;)
Thanks for all your immense support! Anaise, I'm counting on you to keep me updated on your own progress!

Yeah you definitely need to get some new equipment! That must have been super scary to be running on that. I've never even seen or used a manual treadmill :).
I'll keep an eye out for any friends that might have some equipment they want to give away or something like that.
Make sure to watch your back on that thing for now, knowing your luck, next time you'll fall off or something, and I'll have to come save you. haha
I'll let you know when I get started--broke my toe on Friday night--aargh!
I'm glad you didn't die on your treadmill!
We bought a good treadmill (NordicTrack) about a year ago, and it's one of the best investments we've made! Having good equipment really makes a difference.
If it helps, here are some things I do to get me motivated to run/walk. I listen to Conference talks, music, books on CD, etc...conference talks uplift me and help take my mind off the exercise for a good 10 minutes or so. When I don't feel like running but need to, I get in my exercise clothes and tell myself I'll feel SO much better when I'm done, and it won't be as hard as I think it will be. I've set milestone rewards for myself, too, like when I can run such and such a distance, I'll go to a movie, or try a new healthy recipe, or buy a new shirt, whatever motivates you. Sometimes I don't even do the reward at the end because I don't want it anymore, but it served its purpose and motivated me to start on my goal. Anyway, just some ideas. You're inspiring me to set some more goals of my own!
